General:
Perennial herb from a branched stem-base and a stout taproot; stems ascending, several, 15-50 cm tall.

Leaves:
Basal leaves tufted, broadly lanceolate often with a pair of lateral lobes at the base, stalked, 5-10 cm long, hairy and bristly; stem leaves similar, alternate, progressively reduced, becoming unstalked.

Flowers:
Inflorescence a several-coiled, 1-sided, short, compact cluster; corollas whitish to lavender or dull purple, 4-7 mm long and wide; calyces hairy, the lobes linear; stamens strongly exserted and hairy near the middle.

Fruits:
Capsules, 2-chambered; seeds 1-3, pitted, 1.5-2.5 mm long.

Habitat / Range

Mesic to dry meadows, rocky slopes, and forest openings in the lowland to montane zones; frequent in SW BC, rare eastward; S to ID, MT and NE OR.
